Manuel Santos Maia
As an artist, Manuel Santos Maia has exhibited regularly since 1999. His work has been presented in different countries such as England, France, the United States, Belgium, Spain, Norway, Macao and Algeria. In the "alheava" project, Manuel Santos Maia crosses the notion of document with individual and family experience, to achieve a kind of collective 'memorabilia', as an anthropological mirror that binds us all through the filter of a 'documented intimacy'. As a curator (José Maia), he organized several individual and collective exhibitions in alternative and institutional spaces in Oporto and Lisbon, but also in Faro, Braga, Guarda and Elvas. He organized and co-organized film cycles and performance shows and, since 1998, also debates, talks and conferences with artists from different areas, curators, artist-curators, critics and historians. Of several curatorial projects organized, the following stand out: “Lugares de Viagem - Bienal da Maia, 2015”, Fórum da Maia; “Sub 40 - para lá da memória conhecida”, Galeria Municipal (invited by Paulo Cunha e Silva) or “Em tudo quanto é mundo dito ou não dito”, Cinema Batalha. He curated individual exhibitions of Silvestre Pestana, Álvaro Lapa, Alfredo Cunha, Pedro Tudela, Cristina Mateus, Carla Filipe, Mauro Cerqueira, Paulo Mendes, Miguel Leal, Nuno Ramalho, José Almeida Pereira, among many others. Artistic director of Espaço CAMPANHÃ (2008-2009) and Espaço MIRA (since 2013). He has been part of the Educational Service team of the Serralves Foundation's Museum of Contemporary Art since 2000. He was part of the Educational Service team of Culturgest, Oporto. He implemented the educational services of the Figueira da Foz Art Center and Municipal Museum, the TERMINAL project, in Oeiras, among others. He currently teaches "Contemporary Arts", "Art, Culture and Communication", "Theory of Photography" and "Image Technologies" at the Lusófona University of Porto. He was a lecturer in Painting, Drawing, Visual Arts and Photography at the Escola Superior do Porto (ESAP) and “Introduction to Contemporary Art” at Balleteatro, Oporto.

Enquanto artista, Manuel Santos Maia expõe regularmente desde 1999. A sua obra foi apresentada em diferentes países como Inglaterra, França, Estados Unidos, Bélgica, Espanha, Noruega, Macau e Argélia. No projecto “alheava”, Manuel Santos Maia cruza a noção de documento com a experiência individual e familiar, para alcançar uma espécie de ‘memorabilia’ colectiva, enquanto espelho antropológico que nos liga a todos pelo filtro de uma ‘intimidade documentada’. Enquanto curador (José Maia) comissariou várias exposições individuais e colectivas em espaço alternativos e institucionais no Porto e Lisboa mas também em Faro, Braga, Guarda e Elvas. Organizou e co-organizou ciclos de cinema e mostras de performance. Desde 1998 tem organizado debates, conversas, conferências com criadores de diferentes áreas artísticas, curadores, artistas-comissários, críticos e historiadores. Implementou os serviços educativos do Centro de Arte da Figueira da Foz, Museu Municipal da Figueira da Foz, do projecto Terminal em Oeiras entre outros. Actualmente é docente de “Artes Contemporâneas”, “Arte, Cultura e Comunicação”, “Teoria da Fotografia” e “Tecnologias da imagem”, na Universidade Lusófona do Porto.
